Ep 72: The 12 Days of Christmas, New Years, and Epiphany

Artwork courtesy of Blair Clark. This is not the final cover
to the book, but she is starting to work on it...

It reads like a bad joke, but this episode features interviews with 2 Anglican bishops and an Eastern Orthodox priest. Bishop Alberto Morales, Bishop Keith Ackerman, and Fr. Andrew Kishler all gave me time to talk about an assorted amount of Christmas traditions, both secular and ecclesiastical. We discuss Puerto Rican Christmas traditions, how to do New Years and the Feast of the Holy Name as a church, and what Epiphany/Theophany looks like for Eastern Orthodox Christians. And please consider supporting the Kickstarter campaign I have going on right now for my forthcoming book on Christmas: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/chrismarchand/book-celebrating-the-12-days-of-christmas

Ep 71: Happy Pagan Christmas! (and support Chris's book)

Episode 71 features an interview with Gabi and Petr Michlik about the Christmas traditions they knew growing up in the Czech Republic, traditions with a surprisingly, terrifyingly Pagan bent...where Santa is more of a demon than a jolly old elf. But there's so much more.... Have you ever heard about the Christmas tradition where a carp lives in your bathtub for a week before the 25th of December? Me either.

This conversation is being released to help promote the Kickstarter campaign Chris is putting on to help fund the completion of his new book on the history and traditions of the 12 Days of Christmas. Ep 59: Jeremy Casella's New Album and Kickstarter Campaign

Jeremy Casella is a singer-songwriter from Nashville, Tennessee. He has released four albums over the years and is currently putting on a Kickstarter campaign to fund his fifth album Spirit. Jeremy is an artist I've had the privilege to get to know over the years after meeting him at a Caedmon's Call concert in 2004. Episode 59 features two interviews with him, one from 2014 done right before a house show he did after the release of his album Death in Reverse and the other done this past week on the phone as his kids were home from school in a series of perpetual snow days. Finally, this episode also contains a brief interview (and update) with artist Nathan Peterson, who was on the podcast last fall, where I speak to him about the vinyl release of his EP So Am I. You can stream the episode below.

Podcast Archive: Nathan Peterson from 2014—Part 2

An "archive" episode of the podcast, this is part 2 of my 2014 interview with Nathan Peterson. Nathan is a singer-songwriter from Peoria, Illinois who recently got a vinyl release of his new EP So Am I funded on Kickstarter. This part of our interview features a fascinating story about how he lost his voice (which is his livelihood!) and what he chose to do about it. You can find out more of his story, listen to his music, and purchase his book of the same name as the EP here:

Record Review: Waterdeep's Self-titled Double LP

If you blinked you probably missed it. Actually, chances are, even if your eyes were open the whole time, you had your ears to the ground, and you even read independent music blogs you most likely still missed one of the great albums to be released this past year: Waterdeep's self titled double album. It's Waterdeep's Waterdeep.

They quietly released the album back in December to the fans who supported their Kickstarter campaign. Since then, as far as I know, the album has gotten little attention, and that is more than a little too bad. Both discs contain some of the tightest and catchiest melodies you will hear all year. Compositionally the album has been meticulously pieced together, every part a well thought out, well placed necessary addition. These are the types of songs you would hope to hear playing at the end of some important serial TV show. This is contemporary songwriting at its best.

Feeding My Kickstarter Habit: a spring music preview

I don't buy as much as I used to. This has mostly to do with having three kids, a house, and a long stretch of future to think about.  So, when I do make the choice to purchase music it is somewhat of a bold step in that I want to be sure my decision will be backed up with something high quality.  Well, over the past couple of months I have made a number of music purchases and looking back at those decisions I realized there was something pretty unique about all of them: they were all either promoted and funded on Kickstarter or released independently (the Kickstarters are also all independent releases). Adding to this, at the moment I have only received the actual music to one of these releases, meaning I "purchased" the music well in advance of the actual release and sometimes in advance of its actually being recorded.
